Lady Gaga Shows Up At Eminem, Jay-Z Detroit Show

Pop star makes appearance at historic hip-hop concert.By Mawuse Ziegbe

The stars definitely came out for Eminem and Jay-Z.
The hip-hop heavyweights brought big-name guests like Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Drake onstage during their two-night Home and Home Tour run at Detroit's Comerica Park. One megastar didn't hit the stage but did show support during the duo's final Motor City show: Lady Gaga.
According to The Detroit News, the pop sensation, who was in town for her own Monster Ball Tour date on Saturday (September 4), checked out the show from a raised platform in the middle of the arena. Decked out in a silver miniskirt and sporting sable-colored locks, the native New Yorker grooved to Jigga and Alicia Keys' smash "Empire State of Mind." Gaga even threw up the Roc-A-Fella diamond when Hov ripped The Blueprint album cut "U Don't Know." Rap-Up.com reports the singer sipped from a plastic cup throughout the show, and took in Jay's set for about an hour before retreating backstage.
There's a good chance that Gaga and Em will cross paths during another major show: the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The hitmakers have corralled the most Moonmen nods, with Gaga landing a record-shattering 13 nominations and Eminem scoring eight. The pop supernova's "Bad Romance" and the chart-topping MC's "Not Afraid" will also face off in the coveted Video of the Year category
After pulling off a slew of all-star guest appearances and shutting things down with two triumphant high-energy D-Town shows, Em will hit the stage at the VMAs, which will be broadcast live from Los Angeles on September 12.

Kanye West Apologizes To Taylor Swift For 2009 VMA Interruption

'I'm sorry, Taylor,' West wrote on Twitter Saturday morning.By Paul Cantor

Kanye West took to his Twitter account Saturday morning (September 4) to readdress the 2009 Video Music Awards, when he fatefully interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech.

"I'm sorry, Taylor," he wrote. "We're both artists, and the media and managers are trying to get between us. She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you [Twitter co-founders] Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directly."
Expounding on the backlash he received, he wrote, "If you Google a--hole my face may very well pop up 2 pages into the search. ... There are people who don't dislike me ... they absolutely hate me. People tweeted that they wish I was dead ... No listen. They wanted me to die, people. I carry that."
Kanye went on to say that the media vilified him. He alluded to his claim during a 2005 NBC telethon for Hurricane Katrina that "George Bush doesn't care about black people," as a point for which the media was looking to pay him back. He noted that in the VMA aftermath, the media played the race card and turned it into an angry black man versus innocent white girl issue.
"Even though the NBC telethon was widely praised y'all didn't think they was just gone let me get away with that did y'all???!!!" he questioned, rhetorically. "The media has successfully diminished the 'receptive' audience of... KANYE WEST. ...taking a 15 second blip the media have successfully painted the image of the 'ANGRY BLACK MAN.' The King Kong theory. With the help of strong will, a lack of empathy, a lil alcohol and extremely distasteful & bad timing ... I became George Bush over night."
Kanye also said that he had a song he'd written for Taylor. Should she not be receptive to that idea, he said he'd perform it for her. "She had nothing to do with my issues with award shows," he wrote. "She had no idea what hit her. She's justa lil girl with dreams like the rest of us. Beyoncé didn't need that. MTV didn't need that and Taylor and her family friends and fans definitely didn't want or need that."
As his tweets continued, in a stream-of-consciousness manner, Kanye compared his life to that of the Wicked Witch of the West in the book and play "Wicked," which is based on the witches from "The Wizard of Oz." "The Wicked witch of the west basically is so convicted to tell her' truth," he wrote, "when she does it she is outcasted by society and turned WICKED."
Kanye said that he returned from the ego-driven fiasco with a greater sense of who he needs to be in life. "When I woke up from the crazy nightmare, I looked in the mirror and said GROW UP KANYE," he wrote. "I'm ready to get out of my own way. The ego is overdone. I take the responsibility for my actions. Yes I was that guy. A 32 year old child. With new found humility ... who am I to run on stage? I would never ever again in a million years do that. Sorry to let you down."
What do you think about Kanye West's apology to Taylor Swift? Let us know in the comments below!

Ke$ha Ready To Face Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga At The VMAs

'It's gonna be hard taking the Biebs down,' the 'Tik Tok' singer tells MTV News about her Best New Artist nom.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi

Ke$ha

Photo: MTV News

Ke$ha will storm this September's Video Music Awards with four nominations — she picked up three for her infectious breakthrough single "Tik Tok," as well as one for "My First Kiss," her duet with 3Oh!3. But the singer isn't quite sure she'll be able to wrest the Best New Artist Moonman from windswept heartthrob Justin Bieber.

"It's gonna be hard taking the Biebs down," she told MTV News. "It's gonna be hard, but my fans — we can do it!"
Justin Bieber isn't Ke$ha's only stiff competition on September 12; the brash singer is also up for Best Female Video against heavy hitters like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. But she hopes that her fans will party all over the ballot box and sweep her to victory.
"I have no idea! Gaga and Beyoncé and Taylor Swift — everybody in there I respect, so it's kind of like I have no disses to throw," she said. "That's a tough category. ['Tik Tok'] was my first video, so that really is exciting. I had no idea what I was doing. It was my first time making a video, so it's really kind of cool. I'm excited to see if I and a chance, but I think we can take them. Can't we? I'm down to try!"
After she found out about the nominations, she tweeted her excitement, saying, "I don't even know what to say. I'm so grateful and thankful and stunned and excited. I can't even put into words actually how much this means to me ... thank you to every single one of my fans ... I'm f---ing losing my sh--. I'm so stoked!!!!!"
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

Chris Brown Melts Down During BET Awards Michael Jackson Tribute

Singer dances flawlessly but is overcome by emotion when time comes to sing.By Rochell Thomas

Chris Brown at the 2010 BET Awards

When Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo and New Edition were performing tributes to Michael Jackson during last year's BET Awards show, Chris Brown was nowhere to be found, even though many felt he was an obvious choice to honor the fallen legend. Brown's assault on Rihanna several months earlier presumably kept him out of the show.

On Sunday night (June 27), Brown finally got his chance to publicly honor the man he idolized -- and while his dancing was flawless, when the time came for him to sing, he simply fell apart.
After being introduced by Jermaine Jackson, Brown beautifully channeled Michael as he danced to "Remember the Time," "Smooth Criminal" and "Billie Jean." Yet when he grabbed a mic to sing "Man in the Mirror," he choked up, visibly weeping.
"I'm gonna make a change for once in my ..." Brown's voice trailed off. He was out of breath and sounded hoarse. Tears stained his cheeks as he paced the stage, holding the microphone by his side. "This ... wind is blowing my ... Who am I to..." He clearly knew the lyrics but they failed to come out.
Brown faded in and out of the song, closing his eyes, grimacing, trying to soldier on. Whether it was the emotion of the moment or the past 16 months, Brown struggled and failed to find his voice, even though the pre-recorded backing vocals played on.
Finally, he gave up, raised a bandaged finger to the sky and fell to his knees as Michael Jackson's voice could be heard saying, "I'm starting with the man in the mirror." The camera cut from Brown to an audience member who clearly uttered "Oh my God," in shock.
The audience loudly sang the words that Brown could not. Their aid seemed to move Brown to rise from his knees and mouth the words along with Jackson's voice, while gesturing along with the mic as tears rolled down his face. In the audience, actress Taraji P. Henson could be seen mouthing, "That's all right baby," as Brown walked offstage to Jermaine Jackson, who moved to console him.
Brown's emotional performance echoed through the rest of the show. When Niecy Nash came onstage to present the Video of the Year award, she said, "When Chris Brown started crying I got choked up."
Backstage, "a lot of folks were getting misty-eyed, understanding that he was overwhelmed with emotion," BET publicist Zabrina Horton said. "Me, personally, I think 'Man in the Mirror' was great for him to do because I'm sure he still feels bad about Rihanna and wants to be forgiven. He has to make that change himself for himself and he knows that."
Later in the show, when accepting the AOL Fandemonium prize, which measures an artist's "online and mobile fan power," Brown spoke briefly.
"I didn't really prepare a speech because I didn't really think I was gonna be backstage," he said. "But bottom line, I couldn't never do this without my fans. Team Breezy, all the support I've been getting from day one.
"I just wanna say one thing,' he concluded. "I let y'all down before but I won't do it again, I promise. I love y'all, good night."

Katy Perry, Russell Brand's Love Story Began At The VMAs

Russ-Kat's backstage interactions were broken down in "The VMAs: Revealed"By Mawuse Ziegbe

Photo: Jeff Vespa/ Getty Images

MTV Video Music Award nominee and California Gurl Katy Perry has summed up the main reason why fans tune in to the madness every year: "The VMAs are always the best show to watch because anything can happen. And you know us musicians, we're psychos!"

They're also suckers for love. No one can deny that VMAs usually serves up plethora of onscreen antics but for Perry and comedian Russell Brand, the real can't-miss moments happened backstage. The duo are engaged and set to get hitched later this year, but it all began when they snagged each other's attention at the 2008 festivities. In the special "The VMAs: Revealed - Presented by New 5 React Gum," insiders uncover the beginning of their road to matrimony.
Many reports have pegged the start of the couple's relationship to their first encounter on the set of the comedy "Get Him to the Greek." But, more specifically, they met when "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" filmmaker Nick Stoller set up a shoot at the VMAs to score celeb cameos for his Aldous Snow spin-off.
"They wanted hot young female artists to be part of the movie," explained VMA producer Jane Mun. "So, Christina Aguilera was performing, they got her, Pink and Katy Perry." Perry and Brand filmed a lip-lock for the movie and while the scene stayed on the cutting-room floor, the chemistry between the two began to heat up.
"Katy Perry, Oh my god! I was so inspired by Katy Perry's song's message ['I Kissed a Girl'] that I'm currently going through nine Chapsticks a day and my penis has never felt more moisturized," Brand quipped after the singer performed in 2008. Perry definitely got the joke and laughed, "I love him!"
The only problem was that Perry was still entwined with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy. But when Perry returned to the 2009 VMAs as a single lady, it was on. When it came to orchestrating a grand entrance for returning master of ceremonies Brand, VMA folks thought the pop star could play a key role.
"She's had a huge year," said show executive producer Dave Sirulnick. "So [we thought] let's ask Katy if she would sing [Queen's] 'We Will Rock You.' "
The pop diva apparently rocked more than just the stage, because after flirting their way through rehearsals, producers saw the British funnyman promising to call Perry later on.
They struck up a romance, got engaged by New Year's Eve and when Perry heard the news of her 2010 nominations, she tweeted some sage advice: "I luv the VMA's, u never know what u'll get from em! I got a hubby."

Britney Spears Set To Appear On 'Glee'

Creator Ryan Murphy confirms to Ryan Seacrest that pop singer will guest star on tribute episode.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim

Lady Gaga: Check. Madonna: Check. "Glee" has featured the music of the pop stars to acclaim in its first season. Yet the show has yet to get high-profile singers Madge and Gaga to appear in person on the show. But another diva is about to change that.

On Tuesday (August 10), show creator Ryan Murphy confirmed to Ryan Seacrest that Britney Spears will make an appearance on "Glee." Now, fans are anxious to see what they'll do with the Spears discography in an episode set to air next season.
And the cast seems just as excited as the Gleeks about what's to come. Heather Morris couldn't wait to have Spears on set when MTV News spoke to her at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday.
"I get to do Britney Spears! I'm hearing rumors from other people that she's supposed to be coming ... that'd be so nerve-racking," she said. "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."
"I mean I can't really give away songs, but I know we've seen pictures of Lea [Michele] in a sports bra," Jenna Ushkowitz added, confirming online reports that Michele would sing the classic Britney tune " ... Baby One More Time."
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the Glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz teased of featured songs. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."
Fans also want to know whether Matthew Morrison will go all the way and shave his head as rumored for the episode. But the only thing he would confirm is that he couldn't confirm anything.
"All rumors," Morrison told us. "I think you might be surprised. I don't think I'll be performing any [songs]. I might sing a little bit of 'Toxic,' " he shared. "I'm not sure. We haven't really got too far in the script yet, which is why I don't know too much about the head-shaving thing."
Morrison's castmate Amber Reilly is already convinced the episode will be great.
"I can tell you it's going to be a really great episode and you're going to love it," she said. "And they're doing the big hits from Britney."
Which Britney songs do you think are absolutely essential to the "Glee" tribute episode? Tell us in the comments!

'Love the Way You Lie' Joins List Of Memorable Joseph Kahn Videos

Kahn has directed videos for Britney Spears, Eminem, and Lady Gaga.By James Dinh

After much anticipation, the Joseph Kahn-directed video for Eminem and Rihanna's chart-topping "Love the Way You Lie" debuted Thursday (August 4) on MTV. In the song, Em and Rihanna tell the intense story of a woman who stays with her male counterpart despite his violent habits. The video shows Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan engaging in a relationship that's similarly emotionally destructive.

Kahn, who has worked with everyone from Janet Jackson to Rob Zombie, has a particular directing style that emphasizes CGI special effects and futuristic styling. Here are a few other highlights from his career.
Britney Spears, "Toxic"
In the 2004 clip for Spears' flashy "Toxic," the pop princess played an assassin on a quest to poison her cheating boyfriend. The clip employed eye-popping costumes for Spears — including a stewardess outfit and a glittery bodysuit — and quickly rose to the top of the pop princess' videography. "The plot is pretty nonsensical. It's just fun. [It's like] James Bond flicks and sex," Kahn told MTV News. Years later, the director would collaborate with Spears on the clip for "Womanizer" — in which he slyly referenced their earlier collaboration.
U2, "Elevation"
U2 went on a ride like no other when they joined forces with "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" for the 2001 video promoting "Elevation." A call from an "evil Bono" set the mood for the action-filled video, which features the band on a rescue mission with Angelina Jolie thanks to Kahn inserting members into scenes from the film. With the help of Ms.
Croft, U2 dodges the dangers of the bad Bono, although eventually good and evil come face to face in a battle of stereo and vocal power. But the good guys win out, and the band walks into a calm street that has cars and elephants floating overhead.
Eminem, "Without Me"
For most of Eminem's career, the rapper has played the funny guy in his music videos. His clip for the 2002 hit single "Without Me" went further than mere gags, asserting his ability to poke fun at the controversies surrounding his music. Throughout the video, Em parodies a comic-book hero on a mission to save a young boy from listening to a copy of The Eminem Show, which is labeled with a dreaded 'Parental Advisory' sticker. While on his quest, Em manages to sleep with porn stars, practice yoga and appear on "The Real World."
Enrique Iglesias, "Hero"
Understandably, Enrique Iglesias' music videos have showcased his good looks and suave persona. His 2001 clip featured Jennifer Love Hewitt as the singer's love interest and other half of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. The two are on the lam from Mickey Rourke, who heads a rival group of bandits. After some steamy scenes with Hewitt, the pop star is found by Rourke's gang and apparenly killed by them.
Lady Gaga, "LoveGame"
If there's one thing Lady Gaga reps for, it's the busy streets of New York City. Before the days of her music videos doubling as mini-movies, Kahn helped the singer take a journey through the Big Apple's underground in a video that recalls Michael Jackson's also-subway-set "Bad." Accompanied by her crew of dancers, the singer drops it low in a subway station and dances the night away. "I worked with [video director] Joseph Kahn, and he did an amazing job. He didn't just capture the fashion; he captured the artist," Gaga told MTV News.

Lady Gaga To Perform At Yoko Ono Concert

There's no word yet if she's going to take a seat at the signature white piano again, but Lady Gaga has signed on to perform at one of the Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band concerts taking place in Los Angeles in October.
According to Ono's website, Gaga will join a star-studded list for a pair of We Are Plastic Ono Band shows at the Orpheum Theater on October 1 and 2 that will include performances by John Lennon's widow, Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell, Wu-Tang Clan's RZA, experimental solo artist Tune-Yards, punk icon Iggy Pop and Lennon's youngest son, Sean. The shows will take place a week before what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday and will presumably include tributes the the ex-Beatle.
Gaga is slated to take the stage on the second night on a bill that also features married Sonic Youth duo Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. Among the other acts listed on the poster promoting the show: Cornelius, actress Carrie Fisher, director/actor Vincent Gallo, Harper Simon, Mike Watt, Nels Cline, Yuka Honda and Haruomi Hosono.
Though her name stands out on the bill, Gaga's inclusion is not that unusual. She performed "Imagine," Lennon's signature song of hope, at last October's Human Rights Campaign gathering in Washington, D.C., where she tweaked the song's lyrics a bit to make references to the 1998 murder of gay college student Matthew Shepard.
To celebrate Lennon's birthday on October 9, Ono is hosting a series of events and a Plastic Ono Band concert in Iceland. EMI will reissue spiffed-up versions of Lennon's solo albums on October 5, along with some previously unreleased home recordings.

Michael Jackson's Brother Jermaine Celebrates King Of Pop On 'Larry King'

The Jackson family still hasn't 'come to terms' with MJ's death a year later, Jermaine says.By Eric Ditzian

On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson's family and friends gathered at Forest Lawn cemetery in Glendale, California, to lay the King of Pop to rest in the Grand Mausoleum. Almost one year later, shortly before the actual anniversary of his death, MJ's brother Jermaine returned to the site to tape an interview with Larry King.

"It's been tough," Jermaine told the talk-show host. "It went so fast. We've been just putting the pieces together and the family's been having a lot of meetings and we're just trying to hold on. We haven't come to terms. It's something we're learning to live with. We will never accept it."
Speaking softly and quietly, Jackson said the inside of the mausoleum is dark and cold. "To walk this corridor, and all you hear is your footsteps. Michael shouldn't be here. I always felt that," he said, adding that MJ should have been buried at his Neverland Ranch estate.
A year later, Jackson said Michael's three children, Prince, Paris and Blanket, are enjoying as normal a life as possible. They love movies, Jermaine said, though he is not sure if they've seen "This Is It," the documentary about Michael's final months as he prepared for what were to be his comeback shows in London. Jermaine also revealed that they do not visit their father's gravesite at Forest Lawn.
Each of the family members, Jackson said, continues to grieve in their own ways. And they continue to raise questions about the circumstances surrounding MJ's death. Jermaine acknowledged that numerous interventions had been made concerning Michael's use of various prescription medications but denied any suggestion that his brother did not want to live. Rather, Jermaine said the family believes Michael was murdered and that Dr. Conrad Murray, the singer's personal physician who was charged with involuntary manslaughter as a result of MJ's propofol overdose, is not the sole person responsible for the death.
"All of us feel that he's the fall guy," Jermaine said. "It's higher up than just the doctor.
"He did say on numerous occasions, at times to my mother, that he felt that he was being threatened, someone was trying to kill him," Jermaine added about his brother.
While the Jackson family awaits the start of Murray's trial, which they plan to attend, they lament the way the pop singer has been treated by the media, the public and prosecutors in the years before his death.
"If you listen to the content of his lyrics and his music, that's what he is, that's what he wrote from his heart, from his soul," Jackson said. "And it's sad, because now people realize what kind of person he was all along. But he's not here to see that. He got a bum rap because he was so misunderstand. He was trying to take the world on his shoulders and to bring an awareness to the world of what we need to do as people."

'Going The Distance': The Reviews Are In!

'E.T.'s girlfriend and the Mac Guy ooze a laid-back, goofy charm through their pore-less skin,' The Washington Post's Michael O'Sullivan writes.By Eric Ditzian

Drew Barrymore in "Going the Distance"

Photo: Warner Bros.

I'll go ahead and say it: I really liked "Going the Distance." Frankly, I'm surprised more early viewers didn't, as the Drew Barrymore comedy is currently at a meager 49 percent freshness at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator.

What else do we want in our romantic comedies, people? I'll surely sound like a PR flack for saying this, but "Going the Distance" has something for everyone. It's got the aw-shucks love story, realistically drawn central characters, some fabulously raunchy supporting players in Charlie Day ("It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") and Jason Sudeikis ("Saturday Night Live"), a plot that really does manage to avoid rom-com clichés, and it's pretty darn funny.
I walked into the screening room with low expectations and walked out giggling. But clearly I'm in the minority. Without a big name co-star beside her, Barrymore's films tend to open small, and "Going the Distance" will likely be no different, grossing in the $12 million-to-$15 million range. The movie deserves more love. Here's what the critics are saying.
The Story
"The movie focuses on Erin (Drew Barrymore) and Garrett (Justin Long). She is a journalism grad student wrapping up a summer internship at a New York newspaper; he works for a record company based in the city. ... Erin and Garrett meet over a vintage video game, get stoned, have sex and become a couple. But once her internship ends, she heads back to California and the two struggle to make a long-distance relationship work. Texting goes only so far; what about physical contact? Temptations are tossed in, in the form of flirty, understanding co-workers of the opposite sex." — Randy Cordova, The Arizona Republic
The Stars
"Drew Barrymore and Justin Long make one cute couple. Whether or not the actors' on-again-off-again real-life romance helped their performances as lovers frustrated by geography — he's in Manhattan, she's in San Francisco — it's clear they have chemistry. E.T.'s girlfriend and the Mac Guy ooze a laid-back, goofy charm through their pore-less skin. They're a modern-day Hepburn and Grant." — Michael O'Sullivan, The Washington Post
The Direction
"Nanette Burstein, whose previous films have been well-regarded documentaries ('American Teen,' 'The Kid Stays in the Picture'), doesn't direct with the surest hand — at times, her camera performs distracting tricks unrelated to the material. But she knows how to let things happen between actors. Unlike the majority of wisecracking but dead-eyed rom-com couples, Barrymore and Long seem to take real joy in each other's company. I'll take that as an excuse to cling to the hope that romantic comedy, that poor, maligned, once-glorious filmic genre, may someday rise again." — Dana Stevens, Slate
The Haters
"[T]his uneven movie is more a compilation of contemporary images and concerns peppered with derivative raucous scenarios, à la Judd Apatow movies, than an involving romantic comedy. There are the formulaic montages — lots of scenes of Barrymore and Long making out all over Manhattan — and predictable moments like getting high amid giggles and prattling on about their favorite movies. When Long goes to the tanning booth, it's hard to keep from groaning, given how many rom-coms feel the need to insert a tanning casualty scene. Long, in goofy shower cap, gamely manages to make this sequence funnier than previous on-screen tanning debacles. In his first romantic lead, Long gets the most laughs, his pleasantly offhand and quick wit coming off in an almost improvisational style. He and Barrymore are both convincing as best friends who fall in love. They needed a better playing field." — Claudia Puig, USA Today
The Final Word
"First-time writer Geoff LaTulippe could have written Erin as nothing but a male fantasy of the 'cool' girlfriend, but guided by his smart script, directed by Nanette Burstein and played by the timelessly appealing Barrymore, Erin turns into a real, vulnerable, relatable person. The same goes for Long as Garrett, and the rest of the movie for that matter — 'Going the Distance' is by no means perfect, but it's light years beyond the average rom-com, bracingly honest and genuinely funny about the ups and downs of relationships. Barrymore and Long, once a real-life couple and now who-knows-what, have a real chemistry that complements their well-written, realistic characters, and even when the movie falls apart around them in the third act, we root for these two crazy kids and their shot at romance. They elevate the story beyond its more flawed moments, but really, 'Going the Distance' is pretty special all on its own." — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend

Rihanna's 'Battleship' Will Join Pantheon Of Singers' First Flicks

From Madonna's 'A Certain Sacrifice' to Taylor Swift's 'Valentine's Day,' pop stars' first forays into acting have been interesting.By Eric Ditzian

Taylor Swift in "Valentine's Day"

Last February, during a swing through South Korea, Rihanna told MTV Asia that she had dreams of becoming a Hollywood superstar.
"I would love to get into comedic movies," the 22-year-old said. "As well as action. I love action. I would love to play a badass one day."
Well, a badass she very well might be, as she's signed onto "Battleship," a sci-fi action flick based on the classic board game and co-starring Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgård. Of course, this isn't the first time a celebrated singer has ditched the recording studio for the soundstage. As Rihanna boards "Battleship," she joins a long line of artists-turned-actresses. Let's take a look back at the first movie roles from some our favorite singers.
Beyoncé in "Austin Powers in Goldmember"
No disrespect to the 2001 MTV movie "Carmen: A Hip Hopera," but 2002's "Goldmember" was Beyoncé's first turn on the big screen. And what a debut it was. She essentially played herself, albeit a '70s version of herself with super high hair and a handgun, but that is exactly what Beyoncé needed. The role didn't require very much in terms of acting chops and gave her the chance to get comfortable in front of the camera. Veteran comedic talent like Mike Myers, Seth Green and Michael Caine got the laughs, while Beyoncé benefited from simply sharing the frame. "Goldmember" grossed almost $300 million worldwide, and she went on to star in the critically acclaimed "Dreamgirls" a few years later.
Madonna in "A Certain Sacrifice"
Madge's first high-profile role arrived in 1985 with "Desperately Seeking Susan," but she actually shot her first movie six years earlier. The low-budget "A Certain Sacrifice," a sex-and-violence filled story set in New York's Lower East Side, languished on the shelf for years until Madonna hit the mainstream. She actually did everything she could to prevent the film's release, but "Certain Sacrifice" eventually got a home video release. Madonna might not be proud of the flick, but it certainly didn't have a negative effect on her Hollywood career. She went on to star in a slew of glitzy productions, including "Evita," for which she won a Golden Globe in 1997.
Queen Latifah in "Jungle Fever"
Latifah signed her first record deal when she was just 17. By the time she was 21, she'd also landed a small role in Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever." She went on to meatier roles in "House Party 2" and "Juice," opposite Tupac Shakur. By the new millennium, she had an Oscar nomination for "Chicago" on her résumé and a string of starring credits to her name.
Britney Spears in "Crossroads"
At perhaps the height of her fame, Spears took on a starring role in 2002's "Crossroads," a road-trip story featuring musical interludes and the talents of Dan Aykroyd and Zoe Saldana. The film was a critical dud and a box-office disappointment, and Spears has yet to get another chance at the big screen. In recent years, she's contented herself with cameo appearances in "How I Met Your Mother."
Taylor Swift in "Valentine's Day"
The country superstar appeared as herself in 2009's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," but not until this year's hit ensemble comedy, "Valentine's Day," did Swift slip into an acting role. She played a high school student who falls for her classmate, played by none other than Taylor Lautner. No word yet what her next movie project might be, but her, "Valentine's" director Garry Marshall is gearing up for his next ensemble flick, "New Year's Eve." Ms. Swift, ya interested?
Who is your favorite musician-turned-actor? Talk about it in the comments.

Ke$ha Does Her Own Stunts In VMA Promo

'I thought I was gonna fall on my head, but I didn't,' the singer says.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Ke$ha at her 2010 VMA promo shoot

Photo: Kristian Dowling / PictureGroup

Breakout poptress Ke$ha is up for three MTV Video Music Awards and is slated to present an award when the festivities kick off Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. The "Tik Tok" singer is sure to fit right in amid the typical VMA rowdiness, and even the promo for her appearance is chock-full of high-flying stunts and other craziness.

"The concept ... is I wake up, like a pimp, and I hear some noise, and there's like a wind coming through my boudoir doors, and I run to see what it is, and I just get shoved out by this gust of wind that's supposedly 'fate,' " Ke$ha said, setting up the clip. "Then, I start falling and falling through ... all of my experiences that got me to this point, which is attending the VMAs."
Creating the illusion of a free fall for the spot required Ke$ha to swing about on a harness, an experience that apparently looks way more fun than it feels.
"I did do all my own stunts today, and my vag hurts," Ke$ha griped. "It was kind of scary, because ... I was flying around." Being suspended may have been a bit harsh on her lady bits, but the singer said she's no novice when it comes to hanging around for her videos. "I have used some harnesses before [on] my video for 'Blah Blah Blah.' ... I'm into it."
Ke$ha may have some experience getting strapped into harnesses, but she also admitted that dangling from the contraption was the hardest part of filming. "I think the harness was scarier, only because it was immensely painful as well, and I couldn't touch the ground," she said. "I thought I was gonna fall on my head, but I didn't."
Ultimately, the "Your Love Is My Drug" singer wasn't sweating any of the potential risks of shooting the promo.
"I was only, like, 12 feet high," Ke$ha said. "Worst-case scenario: I just would have, like, broke an arm."
What are you expecting from Ke$ha's appearance at the VMAs? Sound off in the comments below!

'My Soul To Take' Uses 3-D 'Subtly,' Wes Craven Says

'You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D,' writer/director tells MTV News.By Kara Warner

Wes Craven

Photo: Getty Images

Buzz has steadily been building around Wes Craven's upcoming horror thriller "My Soul to Take." The film, which opens October 8, marks the first writer/director efforts from the beloved genre filmmaker since his segment in 2006's "Paris je t'aime."

When MTV News caught up with Craven during a brief-yet-miraculous window of downtime recently — he's currently in the middle of shooting "Scream 4" — he revealed his unique inspiration for "My Soul to Take," why it's more than "Stand by Me" with a knife, and how his use of post-production 3-D conversion differs from the way in which other films have used it.
MTV: It's been a while since you've written and directed a film. How did that come about?
Wes Craven: I guess it was just the happy circumstance of having a conversation with [executive producer] Andrew Rona, who at that time was running Rogue Pictures, and him saying, "Got any ideas? I'd love to do another picture with you," and I had just had an idea, and so I pitched him over coffee, and he gave me a green light for the script, and off we went.
MTV: How and when did the inspiration for the story strike you?
Craven: I know exactly when it came; I have no idea what inspired it. Sometimes I have these strange thoughts I'm almost embarrassed to say I have, but I was thinking about what it would be like to be a man — maybe it was because I was afraid I was enjoying too much happiness in my life — but I was thinking what it would be like to be a man who is leading a normal life at the time a series of serial killings taking place in the area where he and his wife live. ... He discovers in his workshop a hiding place. He stumbles upon the tools of a serial killer that fit the description on TV that the police had captured in a security-camera recording, and he realizes that he is the killer and had a hidden personality. It sort of began there.
MTV: It seems like the trailer does a great job of setting up the story without spoiling anything.
Craven: It's a great trailer. We were very happy. I kept saying it's kind of "Stand by Me" with a knife. It's not really a grisly gore-fest in any way. It's as much a family story and coming-of-age story as anything else, but it does have murders in it and it does take place among 16-year-olds, so it does fall into that genre. But I really tried to reinvent that genre by doing something that had a humanistic story to it and kind of a psychological and even spiritual story to it, so depending on how you look at it, it's either a story about personality or about souls.
MTV: The cast is relatively unknown and young. What do you enjoy about working with younger, lesser-known actors?
Craven: The truth of the matter is that, at that age, there are very few actors who are seasoned or well-known. Some of these actors had worked, or at least one had worked in Disney films. These were all of their first starring roles. I really enjoy working with young kids. They have great spirit and energy and are just kind of beautiful to watch and direct. I guess if I could have, I would have worked with really experienced actors so I wouldn't have had to be kind of a schoolteacher too, but they gave great performances. I'm delighted with the way they delivered onscreen.
MTV: When you say schoolteacher, do you mean telling them to be quiet and get to work?
Craven: It's more just teaching them the technical stuff of acting, hitting your marks, finding your light and saying things so they're pronounced enough so people can understand what you're saying. Most teenagers kind of mumble and say things too fast for most people to understand. It's just the minor things like that, but it's actually a pleasure to be helping pass on the craft a bit. ... I directed Johnny Depp in his first film ["A Nightmare on Elm Street"], and I look back and say, "Wow, I'm really happy to be part of that gift to the world that he is."
MTV: Is this a standalone film, or is there potential for sequels?
Craven: I would say that I certainly did not design it to be that, but it does have an element to it that actually could make it as easily a franchise as the "Scream" franchise, where you have different killers in each film. The central character, I think, would be very interesting to follow through a few more films, but it depends on how the film does.
MTV: What can you say about the 3-D conversion?
Craven: It was not shot in 3-D, but the studio offered to do that, and I thought it would be interesting to explore — not as the gimmicky 3-D of some films, but to use it as a natural enhancement. You can experience it the way you experience the rest of your life in 3-D. ... For a narrative film, rather than spears coming at you in your face in the theater, [we used it] subtly to warp reality for a character that has schizophrenia or some of the kids when they're going through their extreme events, breaking those forward from the screen rather than keeping them at the screen or behind the screen and yet doing them in a subtle way so the audience won't be aware we're doing it. We're able to manipulate the mind in a way we weren't able to before. I'm quite fascinated by it. We might be one of the first films to treat it that way. ... It's not a film that puts it in your face. You'll be aware, but in general, it's using it very, very subtly. ... It's been a very interesting education for me.
From the saucy Jessica Alba in "Little Fockers" to James Franco's grueling journey in "127 Hours," the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films' biggest stars.

Justin Bieber Vs. Jonas Brothers Hair-Off: 'Camp Rock 2' Stars Vote

'Well, there are three Jonas Brothers versus one Bieber ...,' co-star Chloe Bridges reasons.By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber

Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images

Demi Lovato told us recently that the littlest Jonas brother, Frankie, has swag like Justin Bieber. And as it turns out, the elder Jonas Brothers, namely Joe, Kevin and Nick, and Justin Bieber are all known for something they have in common, and we're not talking about their bustling careers. We're referring to their incredibly famous and all-important heads of hair. While Bieber is known for his signature swoop, the brothers Jonas are recognized for their curly mops.

This fascinating paralell raised a question: Who has better hair, the Jonas Brothers or Justin Bieber? Their "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam" co-stars weighed in on this battle for the ages.
"I'm friends with the Jonas Brothers [and] I do have to see them later on, but I know that Bieber has this whole thingy, the swoop thingy," Jasmine Richards pondered. "I'm gonna have to say Jonas Brothers only 'cause their hair's great. ... But Bieber ... can I be in the middle?"
Nick Jonas' "Camp Rock 2" love interest, Chloe Bridges, compared the decision-making process on this issue to choosing a favorite summer sweet. "Well, there are three Jonas Brothers versus one Bieber. So I don't know," she explained. "They might win, however, they both have good hair. It's hard to say. It's like vanilla versus chocolate — do you like the straight or the wavy? It's like ice cream flavors."
Anna Maria Perez de Tagle seemed to have the decision locked: "Oh, the Jonases, for sure! I mean, they all have different hairstyles, which is awesome," she said. "Justin Bieber has the one hairstyle. For sure, the brothers!"
Who do you think has better hair, Justin Bieber or the Jonas Brothers? Tell us in the comments!

Chris Brown's BET Awards MJ Tribute Was 'Spectacular,' Jermaine Jackson Says

'He deserves to perform, because it's healing for him,' Michael Jackson's brother tells 'Extra.'By Gil Kaufman

Chris Brown wasn't the only one getting misty-eyed at Sunday night's BET Awards during his tribute to Michael Jackson. The King of Pop's older brother, Jermaine, told "Extra" that he was also overcome with emotion during the dance routine, in which Brown paid homage to some of MJ's most famous moves and then attempted to sing "Man in the Mirror" before being overcome with emotion and weeping onstage.

"To see [Chris'] performance, it was very emotional for me, because it was an acceptance from his fans from what has happened to him and also paying tribute to my brother," Jermaine said. "It was just a spectacular moment."
Fans and critics have been split on the performance, which some saw as the bursting of an emotional dam for the singer, making his first major public appearance since he pleaded guilty to felony assault in his assault of former girlfriend Rihanna last June. Others speculated that Brown may have manufactured the tears to gain sympathy from fans who abandoned him in the wake of the Rihanna attack.
Jermaine Jackson said he thought Brown — a longtime devotee of Michael's and, at one point, considered a modern heir to the R&B throne — had every right to pay homage to his brother. "He deserves to perform, because it's healing for him," Jermaine said. "How can he learn from his mistakes if you don't give him a chance? He needs that. I love Rihanna, and I'm not supporting what he did, but I support him [as a singer] 100 percent. ... I'm just very emotional just knowing what has happened. Chris Brown is a human being, and we all make mistakes. We can't condemn him for what has happened. We hope he has learned from it."
Brown hasn't made any public statements since the BET performance, but on Monday, he did tweet, "My fans are my world," a follow-up to a message earlier in the day when he wrote, "I Love you ... (ever single one of #teambreezy)."
What did you think of Chris Brown's emotional performance? Let us know in the comments.

'Catfish' Filmmakers Respond To 'Is It Real?' Debate

'We're not that creative,' Ariel Schulman laughs to MTV News.By Kara Warner

Nev Schulman and Ariel Schulman in "Catfish"

After making a splash at Sundance at the beginning of this year — both for being a hit with audiences and for stirring up a little controversy regarding the is-it-real-or-fake discussion that divided critics — "Catfish" is on its way to theaters September 17. The heavily hyped indie documentary revolves around NYC-based photographer Nev Schulman and the series of curious events that occur when he begins an online friendship with an 8-year-old girl and a romantic relationship with her older sister.
When MTV News caught up with the film's two first-time directors, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, they discussed what prompted them to begin filming to begin with, their subsequent decisions to keep the cameras rolling no matter what and their reactions to the "it's a fake" controversy.
MTV: Without revealing the big twist, what is this film about?
Henry Joost: It's a true story about an experience we had. The main character is Ariel's younger brother who works with us, who got into a Facebook relationship that took a turn for the unexpected, and we were there to capture it.
Ariel Schulman: People are surprised we started filming as early as we did, but truth is, we've been filming each other for years, and we're always prepared. ... I've got this brother who is just very charismatic and gets into a lot of trouble and gets himself into situations, and if I'm not filming him, I usually regret it.
Joost: We've been doing it since high school. We're those annoying guys: "Come on, you don't have to film this. It's not interesting."
Schulman: So [Nev] gets involved with this 8-year-old girl who's a painter. She's obsessed with his photos, he's a ballet photographer in New York, he's a dance junkie. He's a straight dance junkie, which is a good situation to be in. ... I was already filming him, because I'm always filming him. ... I thought, "This looks like a friendship and sort of business relationship," because she starts painting and selling the paintings based on his photos, and they split the proceeds. ... It develops, and he meets her older sister, and they start to fall in love, and we're like, "Oh, that sounds like a longer short film about Internet romance, and it will end when they meet," and that's just the first act of the movie, and it takes a pretty severe 90-degree turn from there.
Joost: We had no idea where it was headed. It was this soap opera unfolding in our office. ... It was engrossing. Ariel started filming it, and he's been wanting to make a movie about his brother, because separate from the movie, his brother is incredible, a real-life character and always attracting drama and people. He's a really charismatic person, and he has no filter, and he just wades into things.
MTV: You mentioned that things take a serious turn. Were there moments when Nev wanted you guys to stop rolling?
Joost: He had to be talked into it [at times].
Schulman: It was his life in front of the lens, and it gets pretty hairy. We have a couple arguments, and that's in the movie. There were times when I didn't want to go through with it, [Nev] didn't want to go through with it, [Joost] didn't want to go through with it. ... The tables turned, and ...
Joost: Ultimately, it became Nev's journey to find out the truth. He ended up convincing us to keep going at different points; each of us sort of chicken out at different points.
MTV: What do you think of the controversy, people claiming it's all fake?
Joost: It is a documentary in that it's something that actually happened and we filmed it and none of it is staged or fake. To us, we had no idea people were going to have that reaction until Sundance, and after the first screening, ["Super Size Me" director/star] Morgan Spurlock went up to somebody on our team and went, "That is the best fake documentary I've ever seen," and we were like, "Really?" Because how do you react to that in our shoes? ... It's kind of strange, because to us, there's no debate; that's what happened. I think what people are reacting to a lot is, the film is edited. We can't put out a 250-hour movie, so we're making decisions and streamlining the narrative and presenting what we feel is the clearest representation of what happened, but it's real, and there's nothing disingenuous about it.
Schulman: It gives us too much credit, though. If this were fake, then it would be ...
Joost: Yeah, we would be so much smarter than we actually are.
Schulman: Yeah, we're not that creative.
Joost: It would be amazing if we had faked it. I don't know how we would have done it, but ...
Schulman: And my brother would be the best actor since Marlon Brando.

Madonna Becoming a Stage Mom to Lourdes?

As the first-born child of Madonna, Lourdes Maria Ciccone Leon was never destined for an average life. Even so, the 13-year-old is having a pretty extraordinary year. In August, Lourdes and Madonna, 52, launched their own teen fashion line at Macy's. As a promotion for the Material Girl Collection, Lourdes started writing a highly publicized fashion blog. Now The Daily Mail is reporting that Lourdes has a new venture: a role in the upcoming movie W.E., which director Madonna is shooting in London. And then there was last fall's "Celebration" music video, in which Lourdes danced to her mom's music while wearing classic Madonna looks.
As you may have noticed, all of these exciting extracurricular activities have something, or rather someone, in common. Is Madonna pushing too much of her own blonde ambition onto her daughter?

It's hard not to notice that Lourdes has been growing up awfully fast. At 13, she has the poise and style of an adult. (And last week, she was criticized for sporting a picture of a marijuana leaf on her clothes.) But we have to say, her blog sounds like the ramblings of a totally normal, if highly opinionated, young teen. And even if Lourdes' clothing choices are sometimes questionable, they don't look like the work of a highly paid stylist -- her fashion sense is clearly well-developed, and all her own.

Madonna was famously driven from a young age, and from the little we know about Lourdes, it seems that she may have inherited the gene. Her mother insists that the Macy's line was her daughter's pet project, to which Lourdes applied "tireless energy" while all Madonna did was attend business meetings. She's also bragged that designer friends Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney ask Lourdes for fashion advice.

But what about the music video and the movie, which seem more in line with Madonna's interests than her daughter's? Lourdes looks like she's having a pretty good time in the video and the set photos -- not like a kid who's been dragged kicking and screaming into participating. It seems likely that she was just hanging around with her mom while these things were going on, and naturally became a part of them. Or maybe she just enjoys jumping into her mother's spotlight, even as her mom gets a kick (and perhaps a bigger teen fanbase) out of it, too.

We hope that Madonna isn't pushing Lourdes into things she doesn't want to do -- but it doesn't look that way to us. It seems more like Lola is seizing the unique opportunities that come her way, courtesy of her pop-star mama. When she gets a little older and enters her real rebellious phase, that's when we'll see how alike daughter and mother really are!

Justin Bieber Gives Fans A Chance To Be In His 3-D Movie

Beliebers can upload a video of themselves singing 'That Should Be Me' to get in the film.By Kara Warner

Attention Justin Bieber fans (you might want to sit down while reading this, if you haven't already seen the news on Bieber's Twitter account): You have an opportunity to be in his new 3-D movie!
That's right, Justin Bieber and director Jon Chu made the announcement via Twitter on Tuesday (August 24) that they are hosting a 24-hour casting call for all the Beliebers out there to be in their new concert extravaganza. All it takes is a visit to the website BieberFever.com/movie.
According to the site, fans have an opportunity to "be a part" of the movie, which could mean any number of things, as the details in the announcement are few (we recommend a thorough perusal of Paramount Pictures' "terms of use" statement for further explanation before submission). To be considered, fans must submit a home video of themselves singing along to Bieber's "That Should Be Me" or they should "Show us how 'U Smile' " by sending in a photo or video.
When Chu and Bieber made the Twitter-nouncement on Tuesday afternoon, Bieber followed up his initial tweet with an update that fans had already overwhelmed the website's server. "Sorry u guys crashed the server!!" he tweeted. "Haha. It's back up now!! Get in MY MOVIE!!! U got less than 24 hours!!"
When MTV News caught up with Chu recently (who also directed "Step-Up 3-D"), he said the Bieber movie will be for everyone — not just his devoted fans.
"[It's] a movie for his fans, a movie for people who don't know him, and we're gonna tell the underdog story of where he came from," Chu said. "There's not going to be acted-out scenes and I can't talk about the rest. It's not your typical concert film and it's not going to be a biopic ... but it is about his life. I think it's more of a documentary. We're going to figure it out as we go." As for how much of it will be in 3-D, he said, "You'll have to see it. We're figuring that out now."
The Justin Bieber 3-D movie is set to open on Valentine's Day weekend.
Will you submit a video to be in Bieber's movie? Let us know in the comments!
