Sofia Coppola Talks Motherhood, Reality TV And 'Somewhere'

Writer/director's latest, starring Stephen Dorff and set at L.A.'s Chateau Marmont, premieres at the Venice Film Festival.By Josh Horowitz

You could say Sofia Coppola's work is primarily concerned with stories of lives playing out in the heady glow of fame or notoriety: the talk-of-the-town death-wishers in "The Virgin Suicides," the lonely wife lounging in the fancy hotel while her husband hobnobs with celebs in "Lost in Translation," the mercurial public and private life of the young queen of France in "Marie Antoinette."
Now comes "Somewhere," a film set at the famed Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, where a restive hotshot actor (Stephen Dorff) whiles away his time until his adolescent daughter (Elle Fanning) shows up and forces him to reassess his ways of emptiness and agony. The settings might change — 18th-century France, modern-day Hollywood — but the themes and the existentially troubled atmosphere of Coppola's films remain the same.
Yet the director describes "Somewhere" and "Lost in Translation" as her most personal films, in that she also penned both scripts, and audiences are sure to make many connections between the two. The soft-spoken Oscar winner doesn't seem to mind. In a recent phone conversation with MTV News as part of our Fall Movie Preview, she spoke openly about her inspirations for the new film and how her own life — from her time living abroad to becoming a mother for the first time — have influenced her creative decision making.
MTV: The title is "Somewhere." Did you come up with it early on?
Sofia Coppola: Yeah, when I was first writing, that was just a temporary title until I thought of a real title and then it became the title.
MTV: Where did this film begin in your mind? What was the genesis?
Coppola: I'm not sure if it was the character or the setting for this one, but I think it started with wanting to write about Los Angeles, and I was living in Paris at the time. So thinking about Los Angeles, this character came into mind, that Stephen Dorff plays, and then I wanted to do a portrait of this guy and it took its shape from there. And then the character of his daughter came after, and that evolved into kind of the father/daughter part of the story.
MTV: What were you trying to capture about Los Angeles that may or may not have been captured in film before? Do you feel L.A. is ever captured well on film?
Coppola: I like "Shampoo" and "American Gigolo," and I feel there hasn't been a portrait of modern-day L.A. And I was just looking at how tabloid culture was while I was living in France. You know, there's always stuff about the Chateau Marmont. I remember going there when I was in college, and now it's so different with our reality TV shows and paparazzi around there. There wasn't Us Weekly when I lived there. It was a different world and I started with wanting to do something set in that world.
MTV: Have you watched some of the reality shows that the people who sign my paycheck created?
Coppola: I haven't watched tons of it, kind of a little here and there, but it just seems when you look at these tabloids, they're all reality TV stars and definitely a focus on celebrity culture more than ever. But I've seen a few. The twins in my movie are from "The Girls Next Door." So we do have some reality TV stars in it.
MTV: So Stephen's character, can you not help but base your characters after different aspects of people that you know?
Coppola: No, he's a combination of a ton of stories I've heard or different people's experiences, and I have put them all together into my imagination of what this guy's life is like. So it definitely is from people I know or stories I've heard.
MTV: Why was Mr. Dorff the guy for you?
Coppola: I just felt like he was the right guy for this part and I think he's a really talented actor and he has a lot of heart and sweetness that I thought was important for this role. And it's nice to see someone that's not in a million movies every year. You don't know everything about their personal life and all that.
MTV: As a parent, how much are you relaying your own experiences with the film?
Coppola: The movie's the first thing I wrote since having a kid. I definitely think that changes your point of view or that it had an effect on what I was thinking about. So the character had a kid, and how it affected him was definitely part of the story.
MTV: What does the script for this one look like versus what I will see on the screen?
Coppola: I don't think [scripts are] a blueprint, and I kind of stay open to what could happen. I don't storyboard everything and have an exact plan. I think you have an idea of what you want. So the script is definitely what the movie is. I think, if you look back on it, it's definitely from that but there's a lot of improvisation, especially with Chris Pontius, who plays the buddy from "Jackass." Part of why I cast him is because he's great at improvising and coming up with things and he's really great with kids. So I knew he would have a great interaction with Elle's character.
MTV: Were there any exceptional improvisational moments that you captured that weren't in the script?
Coppola: Yes, there are always happy accidents because when you're being creative, it's always the mistakes or things that you look forward to that make it real. I can't think [of one] specifically, but I think just putting Chris Pontius and Elle in a room together, and Stephen, the three of them, it was fun to watch that interaction. There are definitely surprises.
MTV: Can you tell me a little bit about Elle?
Coppola: She's 12 now. She was 11 when we were shooting. I was always impressed by her because she's so natural. When she starts a scene, she doesn't shift. You don't see a big difference even though the character is different from her in real life. But I feel that she is really talented and I tried to stay out of her way and not interfere too much. And we talked about it and she had the impression of what I was trying. At the beginning, we did rehearsals, and we rehearsed with her and Stephen together, so she got an idea of it.
MTV: Would you say at this point in your career you're a confident filmmaker?
Coppola: I don't think you're ever totally confident because you're always pushing yourself into new territory to do something you haven't done before. So it's always scary, but I feel like I have a clear idea in my head when I start a movie of what it should feel like and what it should look like. So I guess it's an intuitive thing, but I don't ever feel confident. It's scary. Besides that, I do have a strong opinion. That's why I like directing, because you can be very opinionated.
MTV: Were you sensitive when making this to the comparisons to "Lost in Translation"?
Coppola: When I started writing it, I didn't know what shape it was going to take, so I really didn't think about that. But then after finishing it, I can definitely see that there are similarities. I've only written two original scripts, so I feel this and "Lost in Translation" are my most personal stories because it originates from me. So there are going to be links, because I think, like all creative people, you're interested in similar themes that you revisit. I think each one of my movies has been a continuation of the last one.
MTV: Why use the Chateau Marmont? What are your memories from your time there?
Coppola: I just thought for this young actor guy in a moment of transition, that's where he'd be staying. And there's something impermanent about a hotel. Chateau Marmont is legendary in L.A. and it's kind of a setting for show business. So it seemed like the natural place for it to take place. And I have memories of going there as a kid and then as an adult in L.A., and we would go out there and it was always filled with interesting people for people-watching and it has great stories and a lot of history that I wanted to be a part of it. But I wanted the iconic L.A. backdrop.
MTV: Do you feel the same need to pick the brain of your successful family members?
Coppola: I always am glad to have my dad when I need advice or mentoring. Sometimes I'll show him [something] earlier on, but this one I had a more specific idea of how I wanted it to be and then I showed him when I was done. And my brother is the producer and he helped me a lot in the preproduction phase.
MTV: You're premiering at Venice, right?
Coppola: Yeah, next week. It's the first time we're going to show an audience.
MTV: How do you feel about that? Do you get nervous?
Coppola: Yeah I'm excited to share it with the audience and [in Venice]. And the guys from Phoenix are going to be with us. But I'm excited and it's also scary and nerve-racking to put it out there in the world for opinions and reactions. But I'm really happy with the way it turned out. I like it, so I hope other people will connect to it.

Lady Gaga's Next Album Will Be 'Shocking,' Producer RedOne Says

'That's part of my job and her job — to keep her evolving,' he tells Billboard.By Kara Warner

Hot on the heels of Lady Gaga's confident pronouncement that her upcoming album is the "absolute greatest work I've ever done," "utter liberation" and an "anthem for my generation for the next decade" comes echoing praise from a reliable — if slightly biased — source: her producer RedOne.
"It's going to be shocking, shocking, shocking!" the Moroccan/Swedish master mixer behind "Just Dance," "LoveGame," "Poker Face," "Bad Romance" and "Alejandro" told Billboard of Gaga's new music. "You never want to go too far from your brand — people love you for a reason. But we still want to give them something with a kick, something that makes them say, 'Oh my God! We didn't expect this!' "
RedOne (real name: Nadir Khayat) said a big part of his job and future collaborations with Gaga are about evolution. "When you heard 'Bad Romance' after 'Poker Face,' it was like the best thing you've ever heard," he said. "We want that type of reaction. I think that's part of my job and her job — to keep her evolving."
The producer told Billboard that he worked on at least two tracks on Gaga's new album but also encouraged her to collaborate with others (he produced a total of nine tracks on The Fame and The Fame Monster), though he wouldn't divulge which hitmakers might be producing songs on the upcoming album.
"After 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face,' 'LoveGame' and 'Boys Boys Boys,' I got a sound out of her, and that made it easier for other producers," he said. "Her sound is so defined that, no matter what, people can follow it. That sound belongs to her."

Lady Gaga's Monster Ball Tour Will Gross Nearly $200 Million

Tour kicked off in November 2009 and will run at least through April 2011.By James Montgomery

There's a reason Lady Gaga doesn't ever seem to want to wrap up her globe-trotting Monster Ball Tour: It's a moneymaking machine.
Billboard is reporting that, by the time the curtain finally falls on the Ball — which kicked off in November 2009 and is scheduled to run until at least April 2011 — it will have grossed nearly $200 million worldwide.
It's a huge number, to be sure, and it's more proof that Gaga has ascended to the upper echelon of touring acts. In 2009, U2's 360 Tour was the year's top-grossing jaunt, raking in more than $300 million, according to Billboard. Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour was at #2, with receipts of more than $220 million. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band landed at #3, grossing more than $156 million.
In the nearly 10 months it's been on the road, Gaga's Monster Ball has made stops in North America, Europe, the U.K., Asia and Australia. And a spokesperson for Live Nation Entertainment, which produced U2's and Madonna's tours — and also serves as the producer on the Monster Ball — told Billboard that Gaga's tremendous touring success only serves as further proof that she's arrived on the scene and has seized the public's consciousness.
"It's an opportunity," Live Nation global touring chairman Arthur Fogel said. "As an artist with that kind of talent and vision emerges, it creates a lot of excitement, and ticket sales worldwide demonstrate that people are really excited to see the show.
"Over the course of the next many months, we're trying to play to as many people in as many places as possible," he added. "It's an across-the-board home run."

Rihanna Dazzles At Sold-Out New York Show

Ke$ha gets Last Girl on Earth party started at Madison Square Garden, as Rih powers through her numerous hits.By Jocelyn Vena

Rihanna performs at Madison Square Garden on Thursday

Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage

NEW YORK -- Before Rihanna came onboard for the Last Girl on Earth tour at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, Ke$ha, completely covered in glitter, got her personal party started with her club banger "Blah Blah Blah."

"I cannot believe I am playing a show at the f---ing Garden. Holy sh-- balls," she screamed to the crowd midway through the song. "Are you guys having a dance party?" she later asked the excited crowd.
Ke$ha's set was much like she is: sparkly, glittery, a little messy, but, overall, a good time. She played all her hits, including "Take It Off," "Your Love Is My Drug" and the song that got all of MSG dancing, "Tik Tok."
While the fans were tickled with delight for Ke$ha's set, they really went nuts when Rihanna emerged onstage in a billowing black dress, with glowing lights inlaid into it. The star was ready to share with the audience her "dreams and nightmares," as a projected video explained. The searing guitar of "Russian Roulette" welcomed the red-headed singer to the room before she belted out the ballad and kicked the show off. After a quick change into a blush-colored, shimmering bodysuit, she went right into her crowd-pleaser "Hard," during which she very proudly rode her own baby-pink military tank.
During "Disturbia," Rihanna embraced her inner Goth, thanks to dancers dressed as crow-like figures on stilts. After a short intermission, Rihanna declared her "Rockstar" status and played a little air guitar in a latex bodysuit and thigh-high boots. "Rude Boy" brought out the sassy and sexy Rihanna fans have come to love.
"Is New York City in the house?" she asked before she sang a medley of "Love the Way You Lie" and "Airplanes," and then transitioned into "Hate That I Love You." "I can't hear you, New York! Anybody out there ever been in love?" she asked. For "Rehab," she lounged sexily on a chaise.
Things got spicy when Rihanna, flanked by two dancers doing saucy acrobatics, sang her Spanish-tinged "Te Amo." Then, dressed in an all-white "bandage" bodysuit, she kicked it old-school with her jam "Don't Stop the Music," throwing a dance party inside of a large cube onstage.
After displaying her guitar skills earlier in the night, Rihanna played some drums before performing a rock-influenced version of "SOS." She then addressed the crowd: "Thanks, all of you who bought a ticket tonight to come see me. I'm at Madison Square Garden and thanks to you guys, we sold out Madison Square Garden -- thank you so much." Then she sang "Take a Bow" before, well, taking a bow.
She kicked off an encore with "Wait Your Turn," in sparkly, knee-high boots, a matching newsboy cap, bra and spandex shorts. Rihanna played her second medley of the evening, combining party jams like "Live Your Life" and "Run This Town." But she ended the night on her biggest hit, "Umbrella," and in a dizzying sea of confetti, with fans singing along, she told the crowd, "Thank you so much."
The show not only displayed her vocal abilities, but also her unabashed performance style; her world is part "Mad Max," part "Twilight" and part OK Computer -- and all Rihanna.

'The Last Exorcism' Leads The Way At The Box Office

'Takers,' starring T.I. and Hayden Christensen, lands at #2 for the weekend.By Adam Rosenberg

Ashley Bell in "The Last Exorcism"

Photo: Lionsgate

[Editor's note: After this story was published, recalculated box-office numbers put "Takers" over "The Last Exorcism," with $20.5 million to the horror movie's $20.3 million. "Takers" star T.I. called MTV News to thank fans for making his heist flick #1.]
The Box-Office Top Five
#1 "The Last Exorcism" ($21.3 million)
#2 "Takers" ($21 million)
#3 "The Expendables" ($9.5 million)
#4 "Eat Pray Love" ($7 million)
#5 "The Other Guys" ($6.6 million)
It was a close weekend race at the box office, but in the end the powers of evil overtook the powers of, well, less evil. The Eli Roth-produced, Daniel Stamm-directed horror mockumentary "The Last Exorcism" took the #1 position this weekend with $21.3 million in ticket sales spread out over 2,874 screens. Trailing only slightly behind in the #2 position was the heist flick "Takers," with a take of
$21 million from 2,206 screens.
Even though it emerged on top, "Exorcism" is a bigger winner than it seems to be. While no budget has been reported, the single camera format, absence of big stars and minimal special effects couldn't have driven the film's cost very high. Even factoring in marketing — which has been largely focused online with viral campaigns like — a $20+ million box-office take is a considerable win.
"Takers," by comparison, boasts a star-studded ensemble that draws from both Hollywood and the music biz. Chris Brown and T.I. star alongside Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Matt Dillon and Zoe Saldana in a crime drama about a high-level, high-stakes bank robbery. The film's budget is reported to hover around $20 million.
It's a sharp dip after that for positions three through five, which are filled by movies that came out earlier in August. The action throwback "The Expendables" came in at #3 with $9.5 million, slightly more than half of what it earned last week. Still, with a total gross of roughly $82 million — more than double its reported budget — in just 17 days, the Sylvester Stallone-directed/ written/ starring flick is no small success.
Spots four and five went to a pair of Sony releases, "Eat Pray Love" and "The Other Guys," which brought in $7 million and $6.6 million, respectively. The surprise for the weekend was the theatrical re-release of "Avatar." Opening on roughly 800 screens with the benefit of 3-D and an added nine minutes of footage, the movie only managed to pull in $4 million, good enough for a #12 spot on the weekend list.
Check out everything we've got on "The Last Exorcism," "Takers" and "The Expendables."

'Glee' Creator On Britney Spears Cameo: 'It Was Like The President Had Come'

'I couldn't get into my own sets at one point, which I thought was hilarious,' Ryan Murphy says.By James Dinh

Britney Spears may be a pop princess, but "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy felt as if the president had stopped by the set during Spears' recent visit to William McKinley High. Murphy dished about what went down when the singer filmed her cameo for the "Britney/Brittany" episode.
"It was literally like the President had come," Murphy told E! Online. "We all had to wear wristbands. I couldn't get into my own sets at one point, which I thought was hilarious."
Murphy thought Spears was moved by the cast's admiration for her. "I think she was really impressed about how so many kids of the show do what they do because they grew up wanting to be Britney Spears," he said. "She was really sweet with them. We had a number with a bunch of 8-year-old dancers in the show and she spent a lot of time talking to them, and they did the number for her ... She was so sweet, she's great with kids, she was so awesome."
But security remained tight, Murphy said, because "everybody was sort of trying to get into the set and find out what the hell she's doing in the episode." What Spears will be doing on the show is still unknown, but a picture the singer tweeted from the set suggests that she may be playing some sort of receptionist.
Aside from hanging with the pop princess on set, the "Glee" creator also got to hear some of Spears' new material. "I got to hear some of the music she's putting out later this fall or early next year," Murphy said. "It's really a great return to form for her; the songs are amazing so I feel she's riding the crest."
And while there has been talk of Madonna tunes blaring the speaker intercoms once again, Murphy has also revealed that Britney "probably" will reprise her cameo spot on "Glee" episodes.
Last week, the singer tweeted photos of herself on set alongside Murphy and castmember Heather Morris. Posing in front of a set that looked similar to the singer's "Me Against the Music" video backdrop, Spears channeled the Madonna look that was donned in their 2003 collaboration.

'Breaking Dawn' Scribe Says She's Wrestling With 'Battle Scene'

'It's an enormous challenge to choreograph on the page,' Melissa Rosenberg reveals from Emmys red carpet.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello

Melissa Rosenberg

Photo: MTV News

In the midst of Emmy mania Sunday night (August 29) — Dresses! Nominees! Celeb couples! — which predictably revolved around the world of TV, pre-show viewers got a pleasant surprise as "Twilight" screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg made her way down a very long red carpet at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Naturally, when MTV News caught up with the busy scribe, we had to press her for another update on the progress of the "Breaking Dawn" scripts.

"They're coming along," Rosenberg said. "I just flew in last night from working with ['Dawn' director] Bill Condon, prepping the scripts. It's a lot of work, I'm exhausted," she added. Rosenberg also revealed that she's between 75 and 80 percent finished with the two screenplays. "But we're intent on making them the best scripts yet."
Regarding the biggest challenge she faces in finishing "Dawn," parts 1 and 2, Rosenberg said it's the climactic "battle scene" — in which the two opposing vampire groups face off in dramatic fashion at the end of the book — that's proving to be her biggest obstacle, rather than the infamous "birth scene".
"The final battle sequence is a big challenge because it lasts 25 pages," Rosenberg told us. "It's almost an entire three-act story in and of itself. You have to track (kept all in one setting) hundreds of characters. It's an enormous challenge to choreograph on the page and for Bill to choreograph on the stage."
Rosenberg went on to say that perfecting that scene is her "next big hurdle."
"I've written a couple of drafts [of the scene]; I haven't gotten with Bill [to go over it] yet. That's the next big hurdle to sit down with the stunt coordinator and create the ballet."

Kanye West Fans Aren't Seeing Eye To Eye On 'See Me Now'

Fan reaction to the MC's Beyoncé-featuring single ranges from 'wack' to ' 'Ye is back!!!!'By Mawuse Ziegbe

Kanye West

Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage

Fans agree that Kanye West is back, but they can't seem to agree on how they feel about that. The MC unveiled his latest single, "See Me Now," on Wednesday, and since then, Kanye followers have being going back and forth about whether the track is on fire or a fail.
The song, which features soulful contributions from Beyoncé and Charlie Wilson, is expected to appear on his upcoming untitled album, but, for many, the song takes things back to the MC's debut, College Dropout.
"Wow, it reminds me of College Dropout. Good to hear 'Ye laugh!" Ezekiel wrote on West's Kanye UniverseCity blog.
Bryan C.G. agreed: "This totally feel like your Dropout days. I love it."
Some fans, such as Prolifik, are all about 'Ye reviving the strings-laden throwback soul that kicked off his recording career. "Amazing! Classic flow, classic beats," the fan wrote. "I miss that old College Dropout steez! Welcome back, 'Ye."
" 'Ye is back!!!!" Tiffany wrote. "Hip Hop needs you so much!! You're brilliant."
While lots of online commenters are feeling the song, some of the MC's fans aren't seeing the appeal of "See Me Now." "This song is hot garbage," Luis Ariza declared on West's Facebook page.
The Facebook post announcing the song scored more than 580 "likes" at press time, however, some fans were not on the "See Me Now" bandwagon. "[It's the] first song from Kanye that I have not liked," Ariza wrote.
"This song needs major work," Real Talk proclaimed on West's blog. "I want harder beats and to be able to move my feet."
Chad Jones also chimed in on Facebook: "Not feelin it. Huge Kanye fan and love the evolution in his music but the track is wack. Lyrics are nice but track is wack."
" 'Ye is the man, but this song is WEAK!!!" Wallace Leeth wrote.
Jay Yey Couture thought the G.O.O.D. Music lyricist was upstaged by fellow superstar Beyoncé and undermined by the instrumental. "Kanye will sell this fall, that's for sure. However Beyoncé made this song!!!!!" the fan typed. "Kanye had too much time to come with ... this [weak] beat ... he could have did wayyyyy better."
Yeezy might not have won over all his fans with the single, but he does have the opportunity to redeem himself on the awards-show stage: West will perform at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which air live September 12 at 9 p.m. The appearance marks his VMA return after a notorious onstage dustup with Taylor Swift, but it appears the rapper is taking the incident in stride. West closes "See Me Now" with the ad lib, "Uncle Charlie, by the way. And I'mma let you finish, but I got Beyoncé on the track."
What do you think of "See Me Now"? Let us know in the comments below!
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards were a fitting tribute to an above-par TV season. Fast-moving and clever, with a strict "wrap it up quick" policy on speeches, the show was actually fun to watch.

Host Jimmy Fallon's genuinely witty opener managed to incorporate Mad Men's Jon Hamm, Kate Plus 8's Kate Gosselin, Lost's Jorge Garcia and most of the cast of Glee (among others) in a dance montage to Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." And Fallon stuck to his best move -- music spoofs -- throughout the night. He introduced the big TV categories with his guitar, enlisting help from the likes of Kim Kardashian and Stephen Colbert to sing along.
His funniest moment came when he paid tribute to three series -- Fox's 24, NBC's Law & Order, and ABC's Lost-- that ended this year. Naturally, he honored each with a pop song parody. While his Elton John-inspired send-up of 24 was funny, the most clever bit was his tribute to Lost. Posing as Green Day's Billie  Armstrong, and singing to the tune of "Time of Your Life," he crooned, "The island it was mythical, but in the end they died. I didn't understand it, but I tried."
As for the awards themselves, there were enough "upsets" to keep things interesting, and those who did win weren't annoyingly vain about it. (Even George Clooney, accepting the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, managed to deflect the glory from himself to those who deserve the spotlight: the victims of natural disasters that he's worked so hard to help.)
Here's where the trophies landed:
The Emmy for best drama series went to AMC's Mad Men for the third consecutive year. "We're now in our fourth season," creator Matthew Weiner said. "I never thought we'd get through half of one." Meanwhile, his stars Jon Hamm and January Jones stood demurely to the side, grinning at each another.
The Emmy for best comedy series went to ABC's Modern Family, edging out Fox's Glee and popular mainstays like NBC's 30 Rock and The Office. "This means so much to us, especially considering the caliber of the other nominees," said creator Steve Levitan.
Kyra Sedgwick scored best lead actress in a drama honors for TNT's The Closer. When Sedgwick heard her name announced, she kissed her husband of 22 years, Kevin Bacon, like they were newlyweds. Though it would have been nice to see Julianna Margulies of CBS's The Good Wife or Connie Britton of Direct TV's Friday Night Lights get the win, you can hardly begrudge Sedgwick the prize. She's been nominated for this award, and lost it, four times before.
The Emmy for best lead actress in a comedy went to Edie Falco for Nurse Jackie, who seemed genuinely shocked when her name was announced. Falco obviously didn't expect to best both of the former winners in this category, Julia Louis-Dreyfus of ABC's The New Adventures of Old Christine and Toni Collette of Showtime's United States of Tara, and certainly not to beat out the beloved Glee newcomer, Lea Michele. During her humble awards speech, this four-time Emmy winner heaved a great sigh and protested, "I'm not funny."
The Emmy for best lead actor in a drama went to Bryan Cranston of AMC's Breaking Bad. After bounding to the stage to retrieve his third consecutive Emmy, he began his gracious speech by saying that "during the time it took me to walk up here, I'm venturing there were 200 text messages to my fellow nominees saying that you were robbed, and I cannot argue with that."
Jim Parsons of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was named best lead actor in a comedy went to  This, too, was an upset. Many critics predicted the trophy would go to either Alec Baldwin of 30 Rock or Steve Carell of The Office. But those who don't watch The Big Bang Theory got a glimpse of Parsons' comedy stylings when he presented with Modern Family's Sofia Vergara. When she declared in her usual broken English, "I love the Big Bang," Parsons dryly pointed out that millions of men were probably hoping that she was not referring to his show.
The Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama went to Archie Panjabi. Her speech had that Hugh Laurie effect -- throwing you off because an unfamiliar British accent is coming out of an American TV character. Plus, she was so polite! (Nothing at all like her character Kalinda!)
Eric Stonestreet of Modern Family, won best supporting actor in a comedy series honors, and he charmed the audience with a sweet speech to his mother, who gushed from the audience. A shot of his castmate, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, with tears streaming down his face, was also touching.
The Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama went to Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad, proving that a show's popularity (or lack thereof) doesn't always correlate with Emmy wins. Paul snatched this one out from under actors on much bigger hits, including Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn of Lost and John Slattery of Mad Men.
And Sue Sylvester herself, Glee star Jane Lynch, nabbed an Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy. In her funny acceptance speech, she thanked her fellow Glee cast members. "And I want to say to the cast, 'You're young, and you're wonderful, you're fresh-faced, and when I'm not seething with jealousy, I love you," she said.
Fallon ended the ceremony by popping open a bottle of bubbly and announcing, "Afterparty at Betty White's house!" The champagne was well-deserved, Jimmy.

Kanye West Drops 'Monster' Single With Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj

Rick Ross and Bon Iver also appear on the song from West's joint album with Jay, Watch the Throne.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Kanye West is making good on his word.
The outspoken MC announced Sunday that he'll be dropping a new track every Friday until Christmas with his "G.O.O.D. Friday" campaign. On Friday (August 27), West posted "Monster" on his KanyeUniversecity.com blog, an eclectic all-star collaboration featuring contributions from Jay-Z, Rick Ross and Nicki Minaj.
West collaborator Bon Iver also lends his folky vibe to the track. The Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that the track was the second offering from Watch the Throne, his newly-announced joint album with Jay-Z.
An ominous chorus of distorted vocals opens the track just before Ricky Rozay kicks off his verse over the beat, which is a meaty slice of choppy, drum-driven boom-bap. "Bitch, I'm a monster/ No good bloodsucker/ Fat mother----er/ Now look who's in trouble," Ross spits.
Then Kanye enters the fray: "Gossip, gossip/ N---a, just stop it/ Everybody know/ I'm a mother----in' monster." Yeezy rides the beat with several more hard-hitting, bravado-laden bars, unapologetically feeling himself as he wraps up with "My presence is a present/ Kiss my ass."
Hov abandons his typical crisp, cool lyricism and attacks his verse with a hungry, almost sinister flow. "Sasquatch, Godzilla, King Kong, Loch Ness/ Goblin, ghoul, a zombie with no conscience/ Question: What do these things all have in common?/ Everybody knows I'm a mother----in' monster," Jay rhymes.
Although the track surfaced the same day Minaj tweeted about supposedly marrying Drake, the Young Money Barbie shows no signs of possibly being mellowed by a relationship, delivering a collection of punch lines buoyed by her trademark energy. "Pull up in a monster/ Automobile gangsta/ With a bad bitch that came from Sri Lanka/ Yeah, I'm in that Tonka/ Color of Willie Wonka/ You can be the king but watch the queen conquer," Minaj rhymes.
What do you think of "Monster"? Let us know in the comments below!

Jessica Alba 'Inspired' Robert Rodriguez's 'Spy Kids 4'

Writer/director recalls seeing the 'Machete' star change diapers on set.By Kara Warner

Jessica Alba at the "Machete" premiere

Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images

Let's face it, Jessica Alba is known for her sexy factor. No matter what role she's in, be it a superhero ("Fantastic Four"), a pharmaceutical sales rep (in the upcoming "Little Fockers") or an immigration officer (this week's "Machete"), Alba's addition to any cast turns up its heat.

Such is even the case with Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World." When MTV News caught up with the actress and her director at the L.A. premiere of "Machete" earlier this week, we asked them how her casting came to be.
"I was so inspired, seeing her on [the 'Machete'] set trying to be beautiful for the camera and yet having to [run off] to change her baby's diaper," Rodriguez explained. "I thought, 'You know what, that would be great as a spy mom, I've got to write that in.' "
And since Rodriguez is the writer/director/creator of the "Spy Kids" franchise, he did just that. "I wrote that into the script, based on her," he said of what will be his third film with Alba.
The 28-year-old actress/mom said she's most looking forward to working with Rodriguez again — and to eating more of the director's specialty: homemade margherita pizza with jalapeños.
Moving forward, Rodriguez has yet to cast his new titular spy kids, the husband to Alba's spy wife/mom or the villain Time Keeper. Original "Spy Kids" Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara, as well as their onscreen dad, Antonio Banderas, are expected to play supporting roles. Production is set to begin next month.
Check out everything we've got on "Machete."

Jay Hernandez Says He 'Grew Up Watching' 'Takers' Co-Star Matt Dillon

Actor Jay Hernandez didn't get a chance to appear in too many scenes with the "bad guys" of the film "Takers." His character, detective Eddie Hatcher, spends a considerable amount of time with his onscreen partner Jack Welles — played by Matt Dillon — trying to crack a bank-heist case.
Hernandez says he had a ball working with Dillon, the O.G. of the ensemble cast, which also includes as the gang of Takers: T.I., Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, Chris Brown and Michael Ealy.

Kanye West Tweets Status Of Justin Bieber Remix

'Raekwon's verse is crazy,' he teases about the track.By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage

It didn't take long for the Kanye West-Justin Bieber collaboration to come to fruition. Just days after tweeting about a possible joint project, West let fans know that he's nearly finished remixing Bieber's "Runaway Love."

Early on Thursday (August 19), West tweeted, "Finishing @JustinBieber Runaway Love remix too... don't know when they gonna drop it but Raekwon's verse is crazy!!!"
Prior to jumping on the track, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon confirmed that he was working toward getting the West-Bieber project off the ground. "It's definitely gonna happen," he told XXL magazine. "When you got these kinda talents merging together to do something exciting, I think it's something that's gonna make the fans check it out. I'm big fans of both of these guys. I think, at the end of the day, shorty is a sensation. And [for him] to acknowledge me, it makes me feel good that the young generation is checkin' me out like that. And at the same time it gives me a position to play a big brother in the game. He wants my assistance or whatever, he can get it. I respect him, I like his style."
Its' been quite a week for Bieber, who re-tweeted Raekwon's XXL confirmation. In addition to having West and Raekwon work their magic on his song, it was just announced that the VMA-nominated singer will also perform at the big show. He tweeted his excitement, saying, "Performing at this years VMA's!!! Last year i went and no one knew who i was and this year gonna PERFORM!!! Wild!! DREAM BIG!"
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.

Chris Brown And Usher Unite Onstage In Jamaica

Brown surprises audience with onstage appearance during Usher's set at Reggae SumFest.By James Dinh

Chris Brown and Usher perform at Reggae SumFest in Jamaica on July 25

Photo: Robert Keshishian/ Newscom

While Chris Brown has always made it clear that he looks to Michael Jackson for inspiration, there are nearly as many parallels to be made between Brown and Usher. And last weekend, Breezy joined Usher on stage during the Reggae SumFest 2010 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The duo wowed audiences in the concluding night of the festival.
Brown had already performed his own set on Friday, tearing through songs like "Run It" and "Forever" and showing off his formidable dancing skills. But it was his surprise appearance during Usher's set the following day that really set the crowd off. According to TheChrisBrownBlog.com, the two were also joined onstage by Elephant Man and later engaged in a dance-off.
Video footage from the performance had not surfaced online at press time, but photos reveal the two singing together and even showing some affection with an onstage hug.
Brown took to Twitter Saturday to thank Jamaica. "I wanna thank you Jamaica for your wonderful embrace last night at the show," he wrote. "Next time well do passa passa ... lmao ... (oh hell naw). Love ya!"
Later on Saturday, he tweeted about performing with Usher. "Me and Usher killin Jamaica right now," he wrote.
When Chris burst on the music scene five years ago, he was overcome with excitement when meeting Usher. "To see him face-to-face, I was like, 'OK, Chris, it's gonna be all right, just chill out right quick. You about to do the song, man, don't be no punk,' " Brown told MTV News about recording a song that was later featured in Usher's 2005 film "In the Mix."

'Black August' Screening Draws Chris Rock, Talib Kweli, More

Veteran journalist Dream Hampton spotlights benefit concert for political prisoners.By Jayson Rodriguez

NEW YORK — Chris Rock, Talib Kweli and Dead Prez's M-1 were among the attendees of veteran journalist Dream Hampton's screening Thursday night for her documentary "Black August: A Hip-Hop Benefit Concert."
The event, held at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater, showcased the yearly tribute concert that has hosted performers such as Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Common, Dead Prez and David Banner in New York and South Africa.
In her film, Hampton features concert footage and interviews with a slew of activists.
The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement in Brooklyn powers the concerts each year, and in her doc, Hampton seeks to spotlight issues like police brutality and racial injustice. The concert series and the film seek to address awareness about political prisoners, including Mutulu Shakur, the stepfather of late rap star Tupac Shakur.
"I think the cause of political prisoners in the hip-hop community wouldn't be as relevant in the hip-hop community as it is if it wasn't for [the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement]," Kweli says in the film. "And it certainly has a long way to go from 10 years ago, and I think it's more relevant. The bridges that we build in South Africa and Cuba are important. Every year, the show is bigger and better and grander."
Hampton, who has written about hip-hop and culture for The Source and Vibe magazines, among other publications, has labored over the project for years and is finally set to release the project by the end of the year.
The event was sponsored by ImageNation and hosted by M-1.
Are you looking forward to the Black August film? Let us know in the comments!

Britney Spears Tweets A Picture From 'Glee' Set

'Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!' Spears writes on Twitter.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Britney Spears and her assistant Brett Miller

For fans who may have doubted whether the Britney Spears "Glee" episode is happening, the pop sensation has just provided photographic proof.
The star gave fans a glimpse of her inner-"Gleek" on Wednesday (August 18) by posting a TwitPic of herself next to her assistant Brett Miller, a Spears doppelgänger, both sporting similar specs and wavy blond locks.
After devoting episodes to the dance-floor-filling repertoires of Madonna and Lady Gaga, "Glee" is hard at work bringing Spears' string of hits to William McKinley High. So far, Spears, who makes a cameo in the upcoming episode, is enjoying the process.
"About to do my first shot of the day for Glee tweeties! Here we goooo!" Spears tweeted. The "Circus" singer later added, "What's up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!! Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!"
The "Glee" cast is also pumped to turn out Spears' smash-hit catalog. "I get to do Britney Spears!" Heather Morris exclaimed to MTV News earlier this month. "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."
Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed that Lea Michele would take on Spears' star-making debut hit, " ... Baby One More Time." Aside from Spears' TwitPic — in which she's presumably in costume — and "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy's recent comments that Spears will "kind of" play herself, details about the episode have remained under wraps.
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz hinted about the song selection. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."
What role do you think Britney will play on "Glee"? Let us know in the comments below!

'It's gonna be hard taking the Biebs down,' the 'Tik Tok' singer tells MTV News about her Best New Artist nom.By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi

Ke$ha

Photo: MTV News

Ke$ha will storm this September's Video Music Awards with four nominations — she picked up three for her infectious breakthrough single "Tik Tok," as well as one for "My First Kiss," her duet with 3Oh!3. But the singer isn't quite sure she'll be able to wrest the Best New Artist Moonman from windswept heartthrob Justin Bieber.

"It's gonna be hard taking the Biebs down," she told MTV News. "It's gonna be hard, but my fans — we can do it!"
Justin Bieber isn't Ke$ha's only stiff competition on September 12; the brash singer is also up for Best Female Video against heavy hitters like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. But she hopes that her fans will party all over the ballot box and sweep her to victory.
"I have no idea! Gaga and Beyoncé and Taylor Swift — everybody in there I respect, so it's kind of like I have no disses to throw," she said. "That's a tough category. ['Tik Tok'] was my first video, so that really is exciting. I had no idea what I was doing. It was my first time making a video, so it's really kind of cool. I'm excited to see if I and a chance, but I think we can take them. Can't we? I'm down to try!"
After she found out about the nominations, she tweeted her excitement, saying, "I don't even know what to say. I'm so grateful and thankful and stunned and excited. I can't even put into words actually how much this means to me ... thank you to every single one of my fans ... I'm f---ing losing my sh--. I'm so stoked!!!!!"

Usher, Chris Brown Tease Co-Headlining Tour Online

'What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?' Brown tweeted after producer leaked tour in YouTube video.By James Dinh

With their top-notch dance moves and tunes that make the ladies swoon, an Usher and Chris Brown co-headlining tour sounds like an idea made in R&B heaven. And according to producer Bryan-Michael Cox, it may just happen. This news comes just weeks after Breezy's surprise onstage appearance during Usher's set at Reggae SumFest.
Speculation began when Cox revealed during Jermaine Dupri's "Living the Life" YouTube show that the singers are planning to tour together. "Usher and the boy Chris Brown are going on tour, y'all know that, right?" Cox said. Dupri immediately replied, "They might not know that." But after the cat was let out of the bag, Cox admitted, "I might've just gave y'all some exclusive sh--."
Once word spread that that Usher and Breezy might be planning a co-headlining tour, the trio took to Twitter to respond to the hype. Responding to a fellow songwriter, Cox seemed to backpedal his revelation when he tweeted, "@rchonore86 I was drunk. Lol. Talking crazy. I don't know for a fact that THAT tour is happening. But it would be dope tho. Lol."
But the R&B heartthrobs kept the idea alive as they asked fans what they think of the possibility of an Usher/Brown tour. "What would you guys say if me and Usher went on tour?" Brown tweeted. An hour later, Usher's Twitter message read, "If you could see Usher perform live with anyone - who would it be?"
Reps for Usher and Brown had not responded to requests for comment at press time.
Earlier this year, Brown's U.K. tour plans were postponed because the singer was denied a work visa on the grounds that he is guilty of a serious criminal offense, namely assaulting Rihanna in February 2009.

Last month, Ke$ha made headlines (as she is wont to do these days) when she told Paper magazine that she was considering a move to country music, saying she was "really inspired" by the songs of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.
On one hand, it did sort of make sense ... after all, Ke$ha is from Nashville, and her mom wrote songs for some of the greatest country singers of all time. But on the other, you know, it's Ke$ha. So, when MTV News caught up with her backstage at the Casio "Shock the World" party on Monday night, we decided to ask her about her future plans, and whether they included a countrified makeover.

"I do love country music ... [so] one day maybe, who knows. I don't think I'll stop singing until I'm dead," she said. "I'm from Nashville and my mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard and I just love old-school country music, especially. I relate to it. And I also really like how most country songs tell a story, there's a lot of storytelling and honesty involved, so I've taken a lot of my writing tips from country music ... I mean, I'm definitely not done being a rowdy f---ing crazy bitch, but when I'm done doing that, who knows?"
And, the way she sees it, the songs she wrote for her Animal album aren't really all that far from country to begin with. At least when it comes to the whole "honesty" part of things.
"The whole record is painfully, brutally honest," she said. "Like talking about my ex-boyfriend, how he cheated on me. Idiot."
Should Ke$ha go country? Tell us what you think in the comments!

If only Justin Bieber were 18, then he might have a shot at scoring a date with his pal and Elle photo-shoot partner, Kim Kardashian. When the "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star stopped by "Lopez Tonight" on Tuesday night, she admitted that if their age difference wasn't so large (she's 29, he's 16), she might be attracted to the chart-topping, mop-headed pop singer.

"If he was of legal age, I said Justin Bieber has, like, this swag to him," she said, according to E! Online. "You just have to meet him. He definitely has this swag to him."
While the "Graduate"-inspired photo shoot of the pair frolicking on the beach seems pretty harmless, TV pundit Bill O'Reilly found the photos inappropriate and criticized them.
For her part, Kardashian doesn't see the controversy in the photos. "I thought that the shoot was all in fun. We had a good time," she said on "Lopez." "Everyone's entitled to their own opinion on it, but we were just having a good time and the amazing creative team at Elle magazine obviously thought it was a great shoot. Everyone's loved it.
It was all in fun.'
Bieber, however, may have some competition. Kardashian teases that there might already be someone special in her life. She said, "You never know. Maybe someone has [come into my life]. You never know."
Earlier this year, when he stopped by VMA host Chelsea Handler's talk show, "Chelsea Lately," Bieber admitted he wouldn't mind scoring a date with the reality starlet. "Well, I mean, she actually said, or Kim said, 'I think Justin Bieber should date my sister,' " he recalled of Kardashian trying to set up Biebs with her younger sister. "And I was like, 'I think I should date you.' "
Handler may have summed it up best when she quipped, "Basically, what's happening is, you made it OK to flirt with underage people."

It was a picture worth a thousand tweets: multi-platinum producers Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Swizz Beatz all working together in one studio. The image was snapped by Clinton Sparks and posted on his Twitter earlier this month.
During MTV News' "RapFix Live" on Thursday (August 26), Swizz explained that the trio were booked in the same studio — Swizz to work with N.E.R.D., and Kanye to work on Swizzy's forthcoming solo effort.

By the end of the night, though, they all converged and had a "real down-to-earth conversation; I think hip-hop needs more of that," Swizz recalled.
"It's really confidential, I'm not even gonna front," Swizz said about what went down that night. "I don't want to be the person to let all the news out. I got to save some stories in case 'Ye or P wanna elaborate on that. But just know that it was epic, and it was amazing to see such forces in the room, humbled but honest at the same time, comparing notes, comparing music."
The Ruff Ryders alum said the three producers are very "serious" when they discuss and critique each other's work. But the respect level is so high that no one takes the suggestions personally, Swizz said. And he hopes that the "positive, competitive energy" they have together results in the best possible music.
"If someone is saying 'no' to something or 'It's not right,' the reason why is gonna come, and then the debate," Swizz said of the process. "And you make the decision after that."
